This will be the topic of the press conference on April 19, 2002, organized by the Ministry of Industry, Science and Technologies and the non-commercial partnership Biomak promoting the Interdepartmental Innovation Program Biotechnology for Medicine and Agroindustrial Complex.
Biotechnology means the use of live organisms and biological processes in production. Though the system of science-and-production companies working on biotechnologies in the USSR (including military-related ones) has broken down, the sector per se has not been terminated. Similarly, the biopreparation market has not disappeared in Russia, and the evidence of it is the signing of the first certificate.
Production of biopreparations is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world, and it has a promising future in Russia, too. The prospects primarily include replacement of imports and trade in scientific developments.
The RF Ministry of Industry, Science and Technologies estimates the Russian biotechnology product output as 12 billion roubles (about $400 mln) for the last year. Abercade Consulting provided a smaller figure, about $360 mln. This said, the annual import of biotechnology-related products is estimated as $1billion.
The press conference will also discuss the matters of biotechnology development and commercialization in Russia, with the opinions presented by A.A. Kokoshin, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Industry, Construction and Science-Intensive Technologies, the State Duma of the RF Federal Assembly; M.P.Kirpichnikov, First Deputy Minister, the RF Ministry of Industry, Science and Technologies; V.A. Knyazhev, Deputy Minister; Academician R.P Petrov, RAS; K.G. Skryabin, Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences; as well as representatives of the Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, and those of financial entities and political structures.
The representatives of NP Biomak will highlight the questions of unification of the members of the biotechnology market and problems of its development in Russia.
Biocad's General Director D.V.Morozov will make a presentation on successful commercialization of biotechnology projects.
The General Director of Abercade Consulting E.E. Elshov will make a presentation on investment requirements to biotechnology projects.
The press conference will be held in the House of International Science and Technology Cooperation, the RF Ministry of Industry, Science and Technologies, Moscow, 11 Bryusov Pereulok.
